One of them took off the T-shirt and held it high, illuminating with their phones, hoping that Gilbert would see it and say something. On Saturday, they were there, close to the front when Gilbert played the song. On the front was a purple ribbon and the text: "One Hell Of An Amen" and "In Loving Memory of Danny Carbaugh." On the back was "'Til I See You Again." So, this year, when Carlyn saw that Gilbert was coming to the York Fair, she and her family and friends scooped up tickets. The second verse, Carlyn said, "was him to a T." One of his favorite songs was a number by Gilbert, "One Hell of an Amen," about dying young. Toward the end, he said, "I guess it's my time." She wanted to say goodbye but said she wasn't given the opportunity. They blamed her for his illness, she said. His family didn't allow her to see him, she said. The last time Carlyn saw him was two weeks before he died. He still saw his daughter and Carlyn still accompanied him to the hospital for his treatments.Īfter three rounds of chemo, the doctors threw in the towel. They separated in June last year, and Carlyn moved back in with her parents. He never complained and seemed more concerned about Carlyn and their daughter than anything else. He went through chemo like a trooper, Carlyn's mother, Melanie Crowl, said. Carlyn always went with him, staying by his side during those weeks and months in the hospital. He started chemo, going a couple times a week to Penn State's Hershey Medical Center. He couldn't sleep, Carlyn said, sitting up all night, thinking about it. He was a young guy, and hearing the doctor tell him he had cancer was more than a little unreal. He was always healthy, a hard worker who was in pretty good shape. It came as a shock to everybody who knew him. The doctors did some tests and took some x-rays and found it. It turned into pneumonia and he wound up in the hospital. In early 2012, Danny caught a cold that he couldn't seem to shake. Farming, country music, family - those were the things he liked talking about. He was a laid back guy, not very outgoing, but get him talking about things he was interested in and he could talk your ear off, Carlyn said. He was 6-1 or 6-2, or so, weighed about 250, a healthy guy raised on fresh air and fresh milk. Danny liked the bull riding.Īnd they shared an affinity for country music - Eric Church, Brantley Gilbert, Luke Bryan. They also liked rodeos and went to Harrisburg to see them.

They both like tractor pulls - Danny used to compete in antique tractor pulls - and enjoyed visiting The Buck in Lancaster County for mud bogs and tough truck shows. They did have a lot in common, beyond farming. They went to a country line dance at the fire hall in Airville, not far from the Crowl farm.įrom that date, they were together. Their first date, Danny drove down from Huntington County, where his family farms, to see her. They both liked a lot of the same things. They were both farm kids, both growing up on dairy farms, showing their cows at fairs and farm shows since they could walk, just about. The friend thought the two had a lot in common. Carlyn Crowl met Danny Carbaugh through a mutual friend.
